How We the Church Should Respond to Racism
God cares about racism. As Christ’s followers, we should care. Our country has been confronted and forced to deal with the reality that prejudice, inequality, and racism still exist in 2020. As emotionally draining as it might be, we cannot simply go back to “normal,” because if normalcy includes injustice and oppression then we as God’s Church should desire something better--a community in which ALL people can flourish.
Facing Personal Crisis in a World of Crisis
In case you missed it, there is a pandemic occurring right now. There are protests and riots in the streets of every state over police brutality and racial injustice. There are killer hornets in the Northwest that my friends and I are referring to as tracker jackers—a salute to Hunger Games, which doesn’t feel far off from the narrative of our world right now. Also, a protest has manifested in an autonomous zone in Seattle called CHAZ, declaring a police-free area of occupation. Australia is still recovering from the wildfires that ravaged its land earlier this year. It’s also an election year here in the States.
Daddy Issues
Not everyone gets the opportunity to see a picture of an earthly father who is loving and just. My family knows this well. I think I was about seven years old when my family went to Turner Falls for a fun day. We were walking along in some shallow water when my sister, who would've been about four years old at the time, stepped into a deep part and went right under water….
Bringing Community to The Table
Council Road Women formed a much loved new ministry last year called The Table. We began this ministry not knowing how desperate we would all be for community when the Covid-19 virus would rearrange our world. What a wonderful gift The Table was to our women as we battled loneliness, loss of jobs, sickness, fear and anxiety, plans being disrupted, family heartaches, and so much more.
Crisis Fatigue
As I write this, the Covid-19 pandemic is still altering our daily lives. The racial injustices of our country’s systems are being called to carpet for accountability and change. Every media and social media outlet is saturated with this content. Even the commercials of our favorite shows (Jeopardy!) have been altered in a way to remind us of these crises. These things are so big and overwhelming that we start to wonder if we should even bother engaging.
