The Ten Commandments for a Modern World

The Ten Commandments for a Modern World

I have a bad habit of signing up for things before I really know what’s going on. Like Vickey’s book study this summer—I signed up simply because I had never done a Jen Wilkin study (we are reading Ten Words to Live By.) Lo and behold, I get the book and it’s on the Ten Commandments! Whaaa?! Why did I sign up for a study on something so ancient—I had a brief flash of Charleton Heston playing Moses with the stone tablets and horrible special effects created by 1956 Hollywood. What was the likelihood of any massive new insight emerging on this particular topic?

What's In A Name

What's In A Name

You“ shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” - Exodus 20:7

Do you know the meaning of your name? I took a deep dive into my name one summer in college and, honestly, really struggled with it. I felt like I was the opposite of what my name meant. So, I took some time to really ask the Lord to give me peace about my name, to help me find ownership in it and what it meant as I pursued looking more like Christ.

Modern-Day Idols

Modern-Day Idols

I honestly can’t remember the first time I heard the Ten Commandments. Raised in church, no doubt I was taught in Sunday School of Moses’ delivery of those holy words straight from the Lord, carved on stone by His own Hand, and taken to the Israelites (who were literally  breaking every command…but that’s another story).  As an adult, I have read and studied Exodus 20:1-17 many times, yet just recently learned that Rabbis call the ‘Ten Commandments’ the ‘Ten Words’, since the Hebrew text says, “and God spoke all these words…” (Exodus 20:1).

Fervent: Book Club In Review

Fervent: Book Club In Review

This summer, our women’s ministry book club met and discussed the book Fervent by Priscilla Shirer. We love the reflection, community, comradery, accountability, and friendships that come from reading books together. As most book clubs come to a close on their study of Fervent, we want to look back on what we learned. Our blogs these past few weeks have gone with many of the chapters from Fervent. I am going to recap the prayer strategies we worked on and attach links to the blog posts that go with each strategy. If you haven’t taken the time to read these blogs yet- do it!

Reading and discussing the book, “Fervent” by Priscilla Shirer with our book club this summer has been eye-opening and encouraging. Each chapter identifies and unpacks a specific way the Enemy attempts to hinder our prayer life and, in turn, our relationship with the Lord. I have taken away specific actions from each chapter that will be life-changing for my prayer life.
