Each November our church recognizes the orphan crisis with what we call Orphan Sunday, a day to shed light on the need for foster and adoptive families, as well as on how we can respond. For me, nothing is better than a story to make my heart tender and head spin with ways to help.

Autumn is falling upon Oklahoma, my friends. Our state experiences perhaps a two-week stint of Fall before Winter comes crashing in with it’s cutting wind and biting cold (maybe not that violently, but it comes, nonetheless). But, oh, how that brief season of Fall boasts. From Van Gogh shaming sunrises to Jane Austen-esque mist over our ponds and lakes. Our neighborhood trees are engulfed in a flame of red and orange leaves as our grass browns like a churned lake bed.

I immediately shut down and no longer participated in class that day. I had never wanted to be seen as bossy. I just wanted to get our group project done in an organized way.

While turning the spotlight from the Great Teacher, the religious leaders claimed the center of the room and carelessly tossed a young woman in the middle of their gathering. This morning I sat up and quickly decided to lie back down. Could I do life today?  I wrapped myself tightly in the soft covers that always welcome me and closed my eyes hard. I knew what my mind would chant, and I knew I would have the choice to combat it with Scriptures, whether I committed to a day standing upright or not. One eye at a time reopened tentatively. The loud thoughts pressed in around my mind.
