Spring Fever

“It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is.

And when you’ve got it, you want –

oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want,

but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

- Mark Twain

Don’t you love that after every Winter there comes a Spring?

There’s only one thing that gets me through Winter. Not cozy sweaters, toasty fires, or freshly fallen snow. It is the promise of SPRING.

That’s what Spring is to me – God’s promise. It’s like His rainbow in the sky, promising me that cold, gray and dreary days will NOT last forever. That life will again bud and bloom and burst forth with new life. Literally and figuratively. Just listen to the word “Spring”. Can you hear the bounce in its name?

This March marks one year since the world essentially shut down due to a science fiction sounding virus that wreaked havoc on our planet. During this anxiety ridden, tension mounting, hate hurling, mask covering, forced seclusion of sorts, it has often felt like a long, dark winter that had no end in sight. But, as American author, journalist and naturalist Hal Borland aptly said,

“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”

While there were painful losses during this pandemic season that will mark many of our lives as long as we live in these earthly bodies, there are warmer days ahead. No matter what this season has cost you, know this: in life, as well as in our seasonal calendars, spring is coming.

Just as the daffodils have been fighting to break through the hardened, snow covered ground, we must fight to break through fear, grief and the dangerous ramifications of living distanced lives. We must turn our hearts toward the One who planted us here and embrace the new life and opportunities He has for us on this side of Heaven.

For Christ followers, winter should never last forever. Spring is coming!
