“The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge, but to change our lives.” - American Evangelist Dwight L. Moody

After years of trying to read, understand, and personally apply the Bible, someone finally taught me how to do so. This so radically changed my life that one of my favorite things in life is helping others learn how to feed themselves from Scripture.

Do you have trouble applying God’s Word to your life? If so, here are two important questions to ask yourself about a passage:

What does this passage teach me about God?
Based on this passage, how should I adjust my beliefs and behaviors?

If you need further help to think through a passage and let it get personal, I’ve created a simple acrostic that has helped me. These are five questions you can ask yourself anytime you come into contact with God’s Word and are wondering how He would have you A.P.P.L.Y. it to your life. You can use these questions whether you’re reading, listening to, or just thinking about God’s Word.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself to A.P.P.L.Y. God’s Word

A – ADMISSION to Make

Is there something within this passage that I need to admit? (a wrong attitude or action, etc)

P – PROMISE to Claim

Is there a universal promise in this passage that I can personally claim for my life?

P – PRAISE to Pray

Is there something in this passage I need to praise or thank God for? (some revelation about God’s character, a particular teaching or encouragement, etc)

L – LESSON to Learn

What might God want me to learn from this passage?

Y – YIELDING to Do

Is there something I just need to stop and yield or pay attention to?

Not every question will be pertinent for every Scripture, but your intentional focus will allow God and His Word to become far more personal to you. Find a passage and A.P.P.L.Y. it to your own life. The ramifications for your relationship with God and personal growth should be life-altering.
